P0128: Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature
Your engine is not reaching normal operating temperature, which means your thermostat is stuck open. This wastes fuel, runs your engine cold, and prevents the heater from working properly in winter.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Heater blows cold or lukewarm
- Poor fuel economy
- Temperature gauge reads below normal
- Engine takes long to warm up

DIY Fix Steps
⚠ Safety first: work on a cold engine, chock wheels, use jack stands - never rely on a floor jack alone.
With a cold engine, remove the radiator cap. Start the engine. If coolant starts moving immediately (before warm-up), the thermostat is definitely stuck open.
Let engine cool completely. Open radiator drain valve. Catch coolant in a drain pan (recycle at auto parts store).
Locate thermostat housing (follow upper radiator hose to engine). Remove housing bolts. Replace thermostat and gasket. Torque housing bolts to spec (usually 8-12 ft-lbs).
Refill with correct coolant mixture (50/50). Start engine with heater on full heat. Squeeze upper radiator hose periodically to burp air bubbles. Top off reservoir.
Drive 10+ miles. Temperature gauge should reach normal range (usually halfway between cold and hot). Clear DTC.
